Dearest Once Upon A Fic author,

I'm so glad this exchange is back for its second year :D last year I got a wonderful story about Pandora, and I wrote... several stories. Like 3? I think? It was fun, and I'm looking forward to the whole thing again this year.

Fairy tales, myths, and their ilk are my crack so lemme tell it to you straight: I will love whatever you write. Seriously. Go for it; I'd rather read a story you're happy with but that doesn't match my extra details rather than read a story you panicked over trying to get it just how I requested. Hakuna matata.

My favourite genre is sci fi. I like humor, and realism. I like horror, too, the gorier the better ;) I do not require heroes to be heroic, or faultless, or divine - in fact, I'm kinda a huge fan of human faults, of people who get things wrong but are trying their best.

Likes: I like most things, in particular: small details, female characters, hero narratives, female friendships, etymology, history, passing the Bechdel test, psychological introspection, and competent characters who are good at what they do.

Dislikes: I'm down with anything except sexual relationships that are narratively unnecessary. I'd prefer Gen if possible; I'm asexual and while sex etc neither grosses me out nor triggers me I just plain prefer Gen stories/platonic bonds. However, if you feel that two characters gotta hook up then go with it, as long as it's not like a major thing pretty please?

Ok so, I'd like to start a discussion please, get some comments going, so please jump in with your opinions :)

This entry is public so please share it around, I'd love to hear people's thoughts because I'm honestly stumped.

For the record, Elise is 6.
---------

So. Today the park was pretty deserted (and for good reason; the weather was terrible) so there weren't many other kids there. Elise made friends with a girl called Sara and we played a game where I was a dragon and chased them. It was exhausting, I could have cried.

Anyway this (rather goodlooking) guy, about my age, came over and started speaking to me in English, asking if Elise could speak Italian, to which I said yes. And then he asked if his sister could play, and he pointed to a kid a few years older than Elise & Sara looking shy but excited.

I said yes, the more the merrier, and thought that was the end of it. Let's get back to me chasing kids around like a loon. But no. Elise climbed on my lap and said very quietly that this new little girl couldn't play.

I said why not, Elise said she didn't want anyone else to play. I said that's not very nice. Elise said she was not a girl but a boy in a dress, with short hair. Alarm bells start ringing. I tell Elise she can either let the other girl play or we will go home.

In the end, the guy kind of retreated. It was terrible. I said over and over that Elise was being shy and silly, and I said sorry a thousand times. I had no idea what to do. If she was my kid I'd have lectured her there and then. But she's not my kid, and she's not fluent enough in English for a lecture.

It's upsetting even now, the poor girl walking away not being able to play. How many times has that happened to her? How many more times will it happen?

What should I have done? Should I have lectured Elise anyway? She may have other reasons to not want the other girl to play, I'm not 100% sure what Elise was thinking, but she's very judgemental about said girl and her brothers (they're obviously poor, always in dirty clothes, weird haircuts, weird names etc) but like I said, she's not my kid. I have no idea what, if anything, her parents have told her about this sort of thing (probably nothing).

I told her mother, and she didn't seem to think it was a big deal? ?? She said kids are unkind sometimes, regardless of gender which, yes, correct, but if Elise was my child I would have been mortified. And then I'd speak to her.

Ftr, she had no problem playing with Sara, who she had never met before.

I just... what should I have done? Am I overreacting? Idk????

---------
We go to the park fairly regularly, as do the other girl and her brothers. We'll see them again and hopefully Elise will be a little more accepting??

I am longing to be with you, and by the sea, where we can talk together freely and build our castles in the air.
